The Source of Joy

Psalm 4:6–7

Many are asking, “Who can show us any good?” Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord. You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. NIV

How true that is of our situation today. Many are asking. “Who can show us any good?” There is a kind of disillusionment, a pessimism in the air – particularly perhaps in the realm of politics – a dearth of confidence in leadership, a series of agonizing frustrations that have passed over us in recent decades. But in the midst of all this there is an answer. Who can show us any good? David the psalmist then goes on, “Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O Lord.” Real goodness has only one source. It comes from the Lord, and when He lifts up the light of His face upon us, that light dispels our darkness, our anxieties, our worries, our fears. We are filled with joy. David says, “You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound.” There’s a kind of pleasure and satisfaction and happiness that we get from material abundance, but there’s something different that comes only from the light of God’s countenance upon our lives. True joy that excels anything that we can get from mere material prosperity or security or satisfaction. So remember, it’s the light of God’s countenance that will make your life meaningful and secure.
